The Museum

Gljúfrasteinn was the home of Nobel Prize for Literature winner Halldór Laxness and his family for around half a century. Visitors can soak in the atmosphere of the house where he lived and work, explore a multimedia presentation about Laxness and roam the garden and its surroundings.

Bought by the Icelandic state in 2002, on the occasion of the writer’s centenary, Gljúfrasteinn opened to the public as a writer´s museum two years later. At Gljúfrasteinn, Halldór Laxness’ home and workplace have been kept intact. The largest rooms are a large living room on the ground floor and Laxness’ study on the first floor, housing his library as well as the desk where he would stand and work. Guests can enjoy the house and its excellent collection of Icelandic art works and design furniture as they take in the spirit of this incomparable writer.

A small multimedia presentation about the life and work of Halldór Laxness can be explored at the reception. Available in Icelandic, English and Swedish.

The garden is open to the public and visitors are encouraged to walk around the valley where Halldór Laxness would stroll for long periods of time. A lovely hiking path leads from the beautiful river Kaldakvísl to Helgufoss waterfall.

Audio tours of the house are available in Icelandic, English, German, Swedish and Danish. An illustrated guide in French is available. Guided tours in other languages are provided by prior arrangement.

In the summer months, the museum hosts an acclaimed series of concerts every Sunday at 4pm.

Gljúfrasteinn is located in Mosfellsbær, on the way to Þingvellir National Park on the Golden Circle Route.
