The garden at Gljúfrasteinn is open to the public and a number of pleasant walks can be made in the vicinity. Halldór Laxness spent long periods walking in the beautiful countryside around Gljúfrasteinn. Visitors are encouraged to take a walk along the river Kaldakvísl and around the valley which were both his childhood haunts and his inspiration in later life. A beutiful hiking trail is from Gljúfrasteinn along Kaldakvísl to Helgufoss the waterfall. A map of the trail can be found here.
